Neonatal Resuscitation for Providers Attending Births at Home or in the Birth Center
Penny Lane MSN, CNM is a American Academy of Pediatrics NRP course instructor with more than a decade's experience attending births, both in the home and the hospital. She has developed a course that respects the midwifery-model-of-care, yet also equips the midwife and her assistants to confidently manage a full resuscitation complete through intubation, medication administration and umbilical line placement within the home environment. Each neonate, whether born at home, or in the hospital, has a right to immediate and competent resuscitation.
The most current recommendations regarding neonatal resuscitation will be offered, as well as a plethora of information specific for the out-of-hospital provider, including delayed cord clamping, managing meconium present at birth, staffing models, securing appropriate equipment and billing for neonatal resuscitation.
The 6th edition of the NRP text places great emphasis on debriefing as part of the learner's experience. Debriefing is not simply feedback from the instructor to the trainees. The goal is to discover what went well, what needs improved and how those improvements can be obtained. The best debriefs allow the learners to link their simulation experiences to their personal, real-world experiences. It is important to understand that most of the learning does not take place during the scenarios, but rather the debriefing that follows. Penny encourages midwifery practices to attend the course together, utilizing their own equipment, to better apply the knowledge gained to their own real-world experiences.

Course attendants are asked to read the sixth edition text, in its entirety, and successfully complete the on-line test. Successful completion of the online written examination is required before participants attend the classroom portion of the NRP course. Participants will be prompted to print a Certificate of Completion that they must bring to class and present to the instructor to be eligible for a Course Completion Card. ALL lessons must be completed to participate in the course.
Learners must attend the classroom portion of the NRP course within 30 days of completing the online examination. To successfully complete the course, participants must pass the required lessons of the online examination, demonstrate mastery of resuscitation skills in the Integrated Skills Station, and participate in simulated resuscitation scenarios, as determined by the course instructor.
The workshop will offer hands-on experience throughout all the neonatal resuscitation skills for a course session fee of $100. All attendants will participate and test off in all lessons.

The instructor will distribute Course Completion Cards after the Course Roster is received and processed by the AAP Life Support staff. Course Completion Cards will not be distributed the day of the course.
"I would like to take the time to thank you for teaching the NRP class. I found that your real life stories and experience really added to the class. I learned a lot. Your enthusiasm is also a great motivator. I am excited to progress with my learning after attending your class. I am reviewing my NRP book today and now it make even more since after our class. When I get finished with school I intend to make a real difference for new mothers and hope to drastically improve outcomes for every newborn I can."

One of the biggest mistakes a midwife can make is being unprepared for newborn resuscitation. It is estimated that approximately 6 percent of newborns will need some type of resuscitation.
